Farbige Fl\u00e4chen in Blau-, Rot- und Gr\u00fcnt\u00f6nen vereinen sich in dem Gem\u00e4lde Variation<\/em> zu einer Komposition, die an eine Landschaft erinnert.<\/p>

Das Gem\u00e4lde steht in der Tradition der Variationen \u00fcber ein landschaftliches Thema<\/em>, die das Werk des russischst\u00e4mmigen Expressionisten Alexej von Jawlenski nach 1914 mehrere Jahre lang bestimmen. Bei diesen, im Schweizer Exil entstandenen Gem\u00e4lden dienen Bildelemente wie abstrahierte B\u00e4ume oder B\u00fcsche als Metaphern f\u00fcr unsichtbare seelische Zust\u00e4nde. Jawlenski \u00e4u\u00dfert sich selbst in einem Brief dazu:<\/p>

\u201eIch verstand, da\u00df ich nicht das malen mu\u00dfte, was ich sah, sogar nicht das, was ich f\u00fchlte, sondern nur das, was in mir, in meiner Seele lebte. [\u2026] Die Natur, die vor mir war, soufflierte mir nur. [\u2026] Anfangs war es sehr schwer. Typisch f\u00fcr Jawlenski-Gem\u00e4lde nach 1914 ist das leinenstrukturierte Papier, das der K\u00fcnstler in der Schweiz kennen und als Bildtr\u00e4ger sch\u00e4tzen lernte.
